“Nobody’s Child” is the refrain from a CHamoru song, which the subject often sang as a child. Raised by her CHamoru grandmother and several paternal aunts and uncles, it stuck as a ‘playful’ but accurate nickname. Outwardly upbeat and professionally accomplished, she experienced family disruption, financial precarity and intergenerational trauma which can be traced back to the brutal Japanese occupation during WWII.
