‘Mesgnon’ is a CHamoru word that defies facile translation. Mesgnon speaks to a kind of strength associated with sacrifice or suffer¬ing that is honourable. The title of the painting, suggested by the subject’s grandmother, underscores the idea that this kind of subtle, enduring strength is always worth whatever effort is demanded. The subject is half Seychellois and half CHamoru, and was raised on Guam.
