The serendipitous presence of the single non-CHamoru subject is depicted in Måmes. Last summer, during her Art Omi Residency in upstate New York, Gisela McDaniel crossed paths with a fellow artist and Pasifika Elder, si Tun Dan Taulapapa McMullin. A respected scholar, poet and queer Samoan artist, McDaniel is deeply grateful for his contribution to the exhibition as a subject and for the work he has done more broadly for Pasifika communities worldwide. He reflects on his experiences growing up both in Samoa and the States, when his father was in the military.
