In previous generations, the norm was to have large families, with up to ten or more children being common in the pre-WWII era. Childbearing also began earlier and lasted longer. It was not uncommon for the youngest child of one’s grandmother to be the same age, or even younger, than the oldest child’s first children. Such is the case with the two subjects depicted here, who are close in age and could be sisters, but are actually aunt and niece.
