Pendulum Sun alludes to the mechanisation of the cow at the turn of the century, which increased the production of meat exponentially. The expansion of rendered cattle displaced cows from the centre of agricultural life, to the unseen margins, allowing for the rise of unchecked exploitative practices. While living on a small livestock farm, Lyons was able to witness an emergence of cows from the periphery and their (partial) freedom of movement. With the history of industrialisation in mind, Lyons uses the visual language of Futurism to depict the cows’ swinging heads, as they experience daily rituals like grazing grass that many others are unable to touch in their lifetimes.
