In this work Zhang is thinking about the idea of landscape, landscape painting, spatial depth and how contemporary understanding of these terms have altered. Landscape is no longer defined by foreground-background relationships; depth may be represented by difference.
The work began with a simple digital drawing of land and sea (represented by washes of greens and blues). The drawing was then spliced up and warped digitally. After that the composition was translated onto the canvas. The blue scribbles and hand motifs in the painting are what Zhang terms 'digital doodles' which highlight the ‘collaged' layers in the work.
