"Paris Index 2 is a painting I produced in Paris while researching new possibilities within my drawing practice for the second book of my Recueil series. My drawings slowly started to integrate into my paintings. They began to grow into one language, one perspective on the two mediums. The drawings become inner worlds within the materiality of the paint. The idea of integrating drawings as collages within paintings is not new. What I’m attempting to highlight in this integration is how the materiality of paper itself in relation to painting can become a tool for apparition, therefore questioning the definition of surface itself." - Manuel Mathieu, 2023
