Abstract (2010) is a small glass-fronted wall cabinet which once belonged to Sarmento’s aunt. Inside the closed display cabinet are two identical glasses, one containing milk, the other honey, and two old books whose spines are turned, so their titles cannot be read. Vessels of both milk and honey have appeared in several of Sarmento’s works, the liquids connote both sustenance and natural secretions. Sarmento has often referred to honey as a type of ‘sweet dripping’. As a singular piece Abstract can be viewed as a still life, of things that give you sustenance.
