Tala Madani’s 'Abstract Pussy' series of paintings feature a highly illustrated young girl who dominates both the space and the men who occupy it with her. Seated, with her legs bent at the knees and spread open, her anatomical centre is depicted as the straight man’s singular focus of attention. In these works, the most recent contribution to the series, Madani renders the central figure of the girl across the squares of a Rubik’s cube. The loosely painted men attempt to confront the figure but struggle to solve the puzzle, alluding to men’s frequent misunderstanding of female anatomy. One male figure is lost in contemplation, sitting in the position of Rodin’s Thinker; another appears crushed under the weight of the cube and the pressure of the challenge it poses. Portrayed at a monumental scale, the girl – in the form of the Rubik’s cube – towers over these groups of little men who explore the mysterious puzzle as though encountering a lost ruin.
