The starting point for Zhang’s ‘map paintings' comes from alternative, historical map projections. In contrast to the commonly used Mercator projection, which is often criticised for his distortions and inaccuracies, these maps give alternate ways of presenting the world.
Zhang’s interest in alternative world maps increased during the Coronavirus pandemic as geo-political tensions intensified. She began to see them as visual entry-points to wider discussions on the ways geographical and political relationships are represented. This painting looks specifically at a US-centric map called the Gingery Projection. Zhang was particularly drawn to it at this time of global crisis in which the world order is still very much dictated by US politics and allegiances.
