This painting depicts a group of women playing within a palatial semi-outdoor bath overlooking the Aegean. Mitsola was looking at representation of bathing scenes in classic Hollywood films, particularly Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra. As well as 1960s theatre sets, the architecture is references both Art Deco and Minoan buildings. The large halo-like hairpiece of the figure at the centre of the painting is an amalgamation of Marie Antoinette’s decadent pouf and Medusa’s head of snakes.
