Piaffe is a dressage movement where the horse is in a highly controlled trot in which it remains in one spot. The piaffe was originally used in battle to keep the horse focused, warm, and moving, ready to move forward into battle. Mitsola's painting shows two figures in an ambiguous, semi-erotic choreography that resembles the piaffe. They are naked aside from being adorned in extravagant headdresses and footwear one leading the other on a leash.
