Leiko Ikemura’s atmospheric landscapes evoke the backdrop to a fairy tale, where the trees, sky and earth itself seem to be animated with a lifeforce. In 'Trees', two red trees, raw and without leaves, rise from the red earth as if reaching toward the sky. Painted in washes of tempera on textured jute, Ikemura chooses a medium with a raw earthiness that complements the subject matter, combining to create an organic union of image and support.
