Lydia Yee comments, “Francesca Mollett’s paintings distill observations, recorded in drawings and notes, into abstracted representation of natural phenomena often encountered in urban environments as in her painting 'Nacre' (2024). For Mollett, responding to a place creates freedom to explore painterly language. The subject’s visual qualities can hold an inherent symbolism or an existing history.”
In the words of curator and critic Tom Morton: “She is an artist whose work argues for her medium’s necessity, for painting’s unique ability to illuminate those delicate, often hidden aspects of the world that would otherwise remain dark.”
Francesca Mollett (b. 1991) lives and works in London. Recent solo exhibitions include 'Noon', Pond Society, Shanghai (2024); 'Halves', GRIMM, Amsterdam (2024) and 'Low Sun', Micki Meng, San Francisco (2023). Group shows include 'The Kingfisher’s Wing', curated by Tom Morton, GRIMM, NY (2022) and 'New British Abstraction', CICA, Vancouver (2023).
