144,000 Believers were Lost to Lower Cloister when the Occidental Tower Overflowed with Liquid Fire, On the Eighteenth of April, Regrettably Annulling the Year of Our Lord is a depiction of the capital tower of the Altrightland, the geographic focus of Chisom’s mythical world. The tower is in the process of erupting: it is the locus of political power, and now a physical threat to the lives of the soldiers surrounding it.
Chisom is interested in the catastrophic volcanic eruptions that have significantly changed the course of history, whether it be climate-related or those that have led to societal collapse. For Chisom the painting becomes about looking at the impossibility and failure of escapism, the propagandising of ‘the enemy’ and the brutality of consequences that result from ignoring serious issues in one’s immediate environment. Caught in this irreversible death spiral, the soldiers are lost without a coherent sense of purpose - this moment marks Chisom’s narrative transition from the Gregorian calendar to the NCE - a ‘New Cursed Era’ which is depleted of all engines of escapism and the supernatural.
