With 'A Reality Upgrade & End Alone' (2003/2011/2017/2019) Koo Jeong A explores a long-standing preoccupation with ideas of perception and the complexities of consciousness. This site-specific installation is composed of five thousand crystals. The crystals are scattered across an expansive patch of grass in a garden/park. The crystals are activated when the sun hits them and they reflect light. As the sunlight shifts, the crystals are transformed into a shimmering blanket of sparkles. One's experience of the work changes depending upon the time of day and from what position we view the field of crystals.
'A Reality Upgrade & End Alone' was included in Koo Jeong A’s major solo exhibition 'Constellation Congress' at the Dia Art Foundation (5 November 2010 – 26 June 2011). A Reality Upgrade & End Alone was installed in a two-acre grass field behind the main building at Dia:Beacon. Koo wanted the work at Dia:Beacon to occupy a disregarded space, one which had not been used by the the generations of male artists whose work had previously been exhbited in the museum.
