OTRO (2012), a glow-in-the-dark skatepark, was realised between 2008-2012. The work was commissioned by the Regional Council Limousin for the Centre international d’art et du paysage de l’île de Vassivière. Koo decided to create a skatepark as she wanted to create a work that would be integrated into the landscape and interact with the changing light.
Koo’s design came from a pencil drawing that explored the positive and negative relationships between circles.
Though the drawing was made with a compass, it was completely driven by chance. The positions of the larger circles then determined their connection to the smaller circles. The circular relationships of the drawing are reflected in the different sized bowls, cradle and three tunnels of the skatepark.
Koo constantly looks at approaches to shift our perception of environments and challenges viewers to use patience to discover the essence of her works. At night the concrete surface of OTRO, painted a phosphorescent green, dramatically changes from a pale green to luminescent and unreal landscape.
