Josh Kline’s doped blood sculpture 'Sometimes Hemoglobin Needs a Helping Hand' (2015) was made in response to Lance Armstrong’s blood doping scandal. It was found that during competing in the Tour de France Armstrong would prepare IV bags of his own doped blood and have a van follow him while on the course. He would then be able to pass doping tests when needed with ‘clean’ blood and then shoot up with his own ‘enhanced’ blood while racing. In Kline’s sculpture the blood contained within the IV bag is doped with Adderall, a psychostimulant that was developed to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Through clinical trials, it was discovered that Adderall is an effective performance-enhancer (when used at low doses), improving cognition, memory, task saliency, stamina, endurance, and promoting goal-directed behaviour. Due to the psychological and performance-enhancing effects of the drug its use by professional athletes has been banned.
