Among the motifs which inhabit Sarmento’s work, a female icon maintains a conceptual presence, a subtle and enigmatic muse recurrently punctuating his propositions. He questions the modes and means of representation, with particular attention to the expression of desire and its mechanisms. On a standard wooden table sits 121 framed photographs (of various sizes) of different women. The photographs are of women Sarmento knows such as friends, past girlfriends, his wife, ex-wives that are mixed with photographs of famous women – actresses and models. Sarmento brings into question the image and idea of a woman: an obsessive figure, recurrent persona, a thing of desire.
