'The Source' was the first in the series of paintings Madani was working on at the time, in the lead up to her exhibition Shitty Disco at Pilar Corrias Gallery in 2016. For this painting, Madani was thinking about how the sexual productive force was the strongest and most unexplainable human impulse, and thinking about how this directly relates to the urgency or force in her desire to paint. This feeling finds its manifestation through the figure at the centre of the composition, who is levitating and ascending via some external force, the source of which is the phallus, lifting the body higher.
