These animations begin as hand drawings in a similar way to Koo’s ongoing works on paper series but are then extended into digital 3D animations in order to open up new possibilities in terms of movement and scale; developing a figurative narrative set within a parallel universe of Koo’s creation.
Koo realises an aesthetic evoking the mental layers of David Deutsch’s constructor theories concerning quantum physics, in which "the laws of physics are expressible entirely in terms of the physical transformations that are possible and those that are impossible”. Koo incorporates numerous mental phenomena into these animated narratives: metaphor, analogy, allegory, humour, indentity, role-play, acting personification and anthropomorphism.
Every minor detail of these figure's anatomical movements, together with the replication of light, shadow and scale has numerous possibilities in the world of 3D digital rendering; something shared with the impossibilities and possibilities in Deutsch’s theories of physics. Koo uses a camera point of view spanning around the figures in 360 degrees and zooming in and out to conjur a feeling of weightlessness and infinite scale.
Koo envisions experiences beyond our comprehension of the physical norm. The characters step into "the void" or a portal into another world of possibilities; a world involving transcendence and startling luminosity. Koo referenced the Florence Baptistry of San Giovanni’s celestial light and halo as an inspiration for the animations, evident in the halo shining behind the character in episode 1. The animations depict luminous celestial beings in an extended time and space. The brightness of the object itself, as well as the emission of light within Koo’s scapes replicates mental states and even signifies happenings or events.
Episodes 1 and 2 introduce the 3D digital framework for Koo’s parallel reality, as well as the figure’s anatomy, movements and the presence of luminous light sources, whilst episode 7 CHAMNAWANA (true me & i) introduces a metaphor for our self and true self. CURIOUSSSA and MYSTERIOUSSS can be viewed as poetic descriptions of the two natures of “Ousss” - mysteriousness and curiousness.
The characters' movements are slow and smooth, as if from another time or place, further disorientating our comprehension of the space they inhabit. Bodies morph into eachother and disappear into clouds or voids from which they have emerged. The visible and invisible coexist. In these animations, as in Koo’s work as a whole - there are no boundaries.
