This painting is a portrait of the Angel of the Dispossessed (2018) which is how Klaus Mann portrayed Annmarie Schwarzenbah in his novel The Volcano (1939) a literary chronicle on displaced people in the 1930s. In the painting migrants appear in the waves below the angel. Annmarie was an androgynous figure, a journalist, photographer, and an intrepid traveler.
