In this work Philippe Parreno reproduces the 1950s iris floral wallpaper that covered the suite at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in which Marilyn Monroe stayed while in New York. Also used as a set dressing for his film, Marilyn, here Parreno produces the wallpaper with phosphorescent glow-in-the-dark paint.
This rendition of the wallpaper, fabricated as an installation, works to bring the film set into the exhibition space. Parreno’s work is very much focused on the space of cinema and interested in bringing film into the exhibition envrionment. By producing this wallpaper on a large scale, Parreno invites the viewer onto the set of his film, employing the set of his film as inspiration for the creation of this immersive environment.
