In this work the figure leans casually against a red brick wall. The brick wall motif is use repeatedly throughout Street Scenes to delineate the formal and conceptual boundaries of the named space; the street, a vague yet symbolically charged locale. The use of this formal device was inspired by the paintings of Martin Wong, who poetically depicted L.E.S. in the late-1980's. My street is located in Harlem and my protagonist is situated in the now. Wearing Timberland boots, rolled up jeans, a white tank top and cross chain - the protagonist embodies a Marlboro-esque masculinity. With hands stacked and gaze diverted he appears both mysterious and potentially mischievous. The shadow of a fellow pedestrian can been seen to his left. A shapely woman walking a large red dog, from whom the works borrows its title.
