The Lakeside Pavilion is an architectural project by Chung Wah Nan located in the Junction Road Park, which has since been reconstructed. It was intentionally structured to feature the lake, being hollow at the top and bottom, and appears to almost float above the water. There, one can either appreciate the sky or the lake in the pavilion, bringing to mind the connection and immediate relationship between the sky and the earth found in Chinese philosophy. One can truly appreciate the sound of the rain through its contact with the Pavilion. Though the main structure of the Lakeside Pavilion remains, the top has been covered and the lake is gone, now only revealing a piece of land. Just like other modern pavilion experiments of Chung Wah Nan’s, this Pavilion was considered a “useless” structure unfit for the needs of a metropolitan city. Although Chung Wah Nan’s structure no longer remains intact, the “uselessness” of the Pavilion is what makes it the most wonderful architectural form in Chinese culture.
