Two women living in Detroit. The woman on the left shared details of a journey from Kenya to Detroit determinedly set in motion by her mother escaping domestic violence. A friend, talented DJ, and bright star in the community, in person she radiates nothing but poise and positivity. I would never have guessed at the perils she’d faced and overcome. On the right is another friend who reflected on poignant complexities of crafting her mixed-race identity as Black and Latina growing up. The early death of her father left gaps in her ability to fully understand her identity as a Black woman without him there to help her understand and claim it. This absence compounded her yearning for his presence in her life and interacted with the trauma she sought to heal from. The most powerful constant in her life, and one that she has relied on and helped to define her, was the role of her Latinx spirituality.
