"While on Guam, I met this subject who is a Chamoru shell carver. She visits local schools to educate children about the island, its history, and her craft. We connected by phone in the morning and she took me to her favorite spot on the island that evening to watch the sunset. We shared stories with one another and a few tears. I was moved by her boundless love of the land, the ocean, and her gratitude to our ancestors. She is a strong, resilient and as her painting reveals, an infectiously joyful Chamoru woman. I incorporated shells in homage to her practice and butterflies at her request. I sketched butterflies during my visit home, which are abundant on the island." - Gisela McDaniel 2020
