Two Black LGBTQ women, one raised in the U.S., the other from Africa. One based in New York, the other a community activist in Detroit. Both experienced violence at different stages of their lives. One of the women reflected on a recent experience with a partner. The other shared her story of being molested by a family member as a four-year-old child. When she told someone, the family viciously brutalized her. The womxn talked of the importance of ancestors, of innocence, of blame, family and affirming one’s multiple and intersecting identities. The activist pondered - and embodied - what it would look like to be a Black or Brown woman healing in America. Their resilience and ability to sit with their personal traumas are absolutely integral to their beauty. Their determination to fight for a better world for their communities and themselves will be their legacy.
