In this painting Christina Quarles created a composition that has a continuum between above and below, through a scrolling repeat resulting from the cut off flower stems between the upper and lower green. Confusion between tree and rain above the figures has been fabricated intentionally.
This work marks a departure point from previous work as Christina Quarles used a different colour pallet. Whilst in previous work the dry wide brush figures are always orange, this is the first painting that depicts dark green figures.
This yellow background, first used in her work They'll Cut Us Down Again, 2020, has the effect of drowning out bright colour in everything else - the red and green flowers seem almost like black outlines against this shade of yellow.
