Made at the cusp of the voting process in the US, Kahraman was thinking about endings and beginnings. Death Rattle references a rattling sound someone makes before dying as the saliva builds up in the back of the throat and airways. It’s an indication that an end is near and it can be seen as a beginning to a new way of existing. The painting shows a transitional state in which we are suspended in time. The question lingers, is she pulling it out or is she swallowing it?
