Shara Hughes’ Radiant Sea, 2019, makes use of bold, clashing colours which come together to form a dream-like landscape. The painting comprises four distinct horizontal registers: beach, sea, horizon and sky. Deliberately breaking with the Western tradition of linear perspective, each register jostles against the picture plane, competing for precedence. The painting radiates a hot energy from the inside out. It is simultaneously still and agitated, calm and abrasive.
