Lip of the Mercury Whirlpool is a visceral, atmospheric painting that evokes a state of turbulence, movement and instability. The title suggests a threshold at the edge of a cosmic vortex—a place where the viewer is caught between stillness and acceleration, surface and depth. As with Ramsden’s wider exploration of consciousness and feeling, the painting can be understood less as a depiction of a particular place than as an attempt to register a bodily or perceptual experience. The dense red field seems to pulse and circulate, while fragmented forms emerge only to dissolve back into the surrounding colour, making Lip of the Mercury Whirlpool an image of feeling in motion: a precarious point of contact between the internal and external worlds, where thought, sensation and matter appear to merge.
